Legal Notices

Legal notices are a mandatory requirement for websites, particularly under French and EU law. They identify the website owner and hosting provider. Madra generates them automatically when your site is created.

Legal notices (also known as an imprint or legal disclosure) are a set of mandatory information that every website must display to identify its publisher and hosting provider. They are required by various European and national regulations to ensure transparency and accountability.

This information allows your visitors to know who is behind the website and how to contact you if needed. It also serves as a legal reference in case of disputes or complaints.

Are legal notices mandatory?

Yes. Under EU and national laws, every publicly accessible website must include legal notices. This applies whether you have a portfolio site, a blog, or an online store. Non-compliance can result in significant fines depending on your country's regulations.

  • Business websites — Full obligation with all the detailed mentions described below.
  • Personal websites — Simplified obligations in some jurisdictions: you may list your hosting provider's details instead of your personal address, provided you have communicated your information to your host.
  • E-commerce websites — Enhanced obligations with additional information related to online sales (VAT number, terms of sale, etc.).

What should legal notices contain?

The exact content of legal notices depends on your legal status and jurisdiction, but here are the generally required pieces of information.

  • For individuals — Full name, home address, phone number, and email address.
  • For companies — Business name, legal form (LLC, Ltd, etc.), share capital, registered office address, company registration number.
  • Publication director — Name of the person responsible for the site's content.
  • Hosting provider — Name, business name, address, and phone number of the website host. For Madra sites, the host is Netlify, Inc.
  • VAT number — If you are VAT-registered.
  • Regulated activities — If your activity is regulated (liberal profession, licensed activity), information about the issuing authority.
  • Contact information — An email address or contact form allowing visitors to reach you.

Does Madra generate legal notices?

Yes. When your site is created, Madra automatically generates a pre-filled legal notices page with the information you provided in the order form.

  • Dedicated page — Legal notices are a full page on your site, accessible from the footer.
  • Pre-filled content — Basic information (name, address, hosting provider) is automatically inserted.
  • Footer link — A link to the legal notices is automatically added to your site's footer.

How do you edit your legal notices?

You can edit the content of your legal notices at any time from your Madra dashboard.

  • Update your details — If your address or business name changes, update the legal notices immediately.
  • Add information — If you change your legal status or obtain a VAT number, add this information.
  • Regular review — Check your legal notices at least once a year to make sure they are still up to date.
Warning

Missing or incomplete legal notices can result in significant fines depending on your jurisdiction. Verify that all required information is present on your site's legal notices page before going live.
