Glossary
All technical terms explained in plain language.
This glossary covers the web-related terms you may encounter while using Madra or reading this documentation. Terms are grouped alphabetically for easy reference.
A — C
API
Application Programming Interface. A set of rules that allows different software programs to communicate with each other. For example, an API lets your website connect to a payment service or a mapping tool. You do not need to interact with APIs directly when using Madra.
CMS
Content Management System. A tool that lets you create and manage website content without writing code. WordPress is the most well-known CMS. Madra handles content management for you, so you do not need a traditional CMS.
Cookie
A small text file stored on a visitor's browser by a website. Cookies remember user preferences, login sessions, and analytics data. Websites are legally required to inform visitors about cookie usage (see Cookies).
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets. The language used to control the visual appearance of a website: colors, fonts, spacing, layout, and animations. Madra handles all CSS for you automatically.
CTA
Call to Action. A button or link designed to encourage visitors to take a specific action, such as "Contact us," "Get a quote," or "Buy now." Effective CTAs are a key part of a well-designed website.
Conversion rate
The percentage of website visitors who complete a desired action (filling out a form, making a purchase, booking an appointment). A website with 100 visitors and 5 form submissions has a 5% conversion rate.

Dashboard
Your personal control panel on Madra. From the dashboard, you can manage your website, request changes, view your subscription, update billing information, and contact support. See Dashboard.
DNS
Domain Name System. The system that translates human-readable domain names (like madra.io) into IP addresses that computers use to find websites. When you connect a custom domain, you modify DNS settings to point to your Madra site.
Domain name
The address people type in their browser to visit your website (e.g., yourbusiness.com). You can purchase a domain from a registrar and connect it to your Madra site. See What is a domain.
Hosting
The service that stores your website files and makes them accessible online 24/7. Hosting is included in every Madra plan. You do not need to set up or manage a separate hosting provider.
HTML
HyperText Markup Language. The standard language used to structure the content of web pages: headings, paragraphs, images, links, and more. Madra generates all HTML automatically.
HTTPS
HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure. The secure version of HTTP. HTTPS encrypts data exchanged between your visitor's browser and your website, protecting sensitive information. Every Madra website uses HTTPS by default via an included SSL certificate. See SSL and HTTPS.
I — N
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
Technology that enables machines to perform tasks typically requiring human intelligence, such as writing text, designing layouts, and optimizing images. Madra uses AI to generate your website based on the information you provide in the order form.
Indexing
The process by which search engines like Google discover, analyze, and add your web pages to their search results. A page must be indexed before it can appear in search results. Madra submits a sitemap to help search engines index your site faster.
Meta description
A short summary (about 155 characters) that appears below your page title in search engine results. A well-written meta description encourages people to click on your link. Madra generates unique meta descriptions for each page. See Titles and meta.
Meta title
The title of a web page as it appears in search engine results and browser tabs. It is one of the most important SEO factors. Each page on your Madra website has a unique, optimized meta title.
O — R
Responsive design
A design approach that ensures a website looks and works well on all screen sizes, from large desktop monitors to small smartphone screens. Every Madra website uses responsive design. See Mobile & responsive.
Robots.txt
A text file on your website that tells search engine crawlers which pages they are allowed or not allowed to index. Madra configures robots.txt automatically to ensure proper indexing of your site.
S — Z
SEO
Search Engine Optimization. The practice of optimizing your website so it appears higher in search engine results (Google, Bing, etc.). SEO includes technical factors (page speed, mobile-friendliness), content quality, and proper use of meta tags. Madra handles SEO fundamentals automatically. See SEO basics.
Sitemap
An XML file that lists all the pages on your website. It helps search engines discover and index your content more efficiently. Madra generates and maintains your sitemap automatically.
SSL
Secure Sockets Layer. A security technology that creates an encrypted connection between your website and your visitors' browsers. SSL is what enables HTTPS and the padlock icon in the browser address bar. An SSL certificate is included free with every Madra plan.
GDPR
General Data Protection Regulation. A European regulation that governs how businesses collect, store, and use personal data. If your website collects any visitor information (contact forms, cookies, analytics), you must comply with GDPR. See GDPR.
UI / UX
User Interface / User Experience. UI refers to the visual elements of a website (buttons, menus, layout). UX refers to the overall experience a visitor has while navigating the site. Good UI/UX means a site that is easy to use, visually appealing, and effective at guiding visitors toward their goals.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator. The full web address of a specific page, such as https://madra.io/docs/en/getting-started/glossary. A clean, readable URL structure improves both user experience and SEO.
WordPress
The most widely used open-source CMS in the world, powering a large share of websites globally. While WordPress offers extensive customization, it requires technical knowledge to set up and maintain. Madra provides a simpler alternative by handling all technical aspects for you.
